I am seeing service people getting hassled in supermarkets. It is understandable that people are getting stressed. It is not acceptable that young service staff are getting the blame for a shortage of stock. The stock is in short supply because people are panic buying and hoarding. This is an opportunity to practise your assertiveness skills and step up. If you see service staff being hassled or the elderly being pushed aside, step up. Say something to show that you don’t agree with the behaviour. Maybe ‘Be fair…the shortage has nothing to do with staff’. Or ‘Be careful…you are pushing this person aside’. It doesn’t matter much what you say but rather that you speak up and show that you don’t agree with the behaviour. If you are concerned that you will get an aggressive response simply stick to your script ‘ Be fair…” Your silence may be seen as agreeing with the poor behaviour.
You will remember this time for the rest of your life. You could also remember it as a time when you stood up for the vulnerable. We are in this together. One day, you may be vulnerable yourself.
