What the difference between goals, aims, objectives, purpose or mission? Do you set goals each New Year and then forget them?
Do your New Year resolutions only last a few days?
There is an alternative to setting goals. You can be goal driven or value driven or both. You achieve goals and sometimes pause. Values can’t be achieved at a given point in time. They last forever. You can’t say I have achieved honesty, integrity or quality. It is a direction and will guide you in everything you do. I am not saying to do away with goals.
I am suggesting that you make values primary and goals secondary. Try making your New Year resolution about values rather than goals this year. Which values are you willing to commit to in 2011? What sort of person do you want to become? What do you stand for? What do you want said about you at your funeral?
When you do set goals, make sure they are aligned with your values.
So try a New Year’s resolution with a focus on values for 2011. You will never achieve the value in the same way that you lose five kilos or get a new TV. You own the TV. You become the value. Try it.
