Does your mind wander? I this good or bad…or normal? I suspect normal. Maybe long long ago, it was dangerous to lock into one focus to the exclusion of everything else. If you see the wandering mind as a problem “I wish I would stop being distracted” then wandering will annoy you. Imagine playing golf or tennis and getting annoyed because your mind does other things besides looking at the ball. It seems very normal to keep returning to ‘watch the ball’. Not unlike ‘pay attention to the speaker at a conference when you are tired’.
So, accept that wandering is normal and get used to refocusing when you notice that you mind has wandered. You could practise with your breathing. Focus on your breathing and when you notice that your mind has wandered go back to focusing on your breathing. Don’t get annoyed or frustrated. Just do it until it becomes second nature. Your mind is meant to wander so it will take an effort to focus for any length of time. Make the effort. Develop the skill of coming back to the task in hand especially when listening.
