During a crisis, people feel the need to look after themselves. Maybe even become a bit selfish. Meerkats are different. When under attack from a bit cat, they form a group and create such a noise that they could be mistaken for another large, ferocious animal. They know that they can help themselves by helping others. They know that selfish behaviour is not their best choice for survival.
Counterintuitively, the same is true for humans. The best way to look after yourself in a crisis is to look after others. If you just look after you then you is all you’ve got in your team. Look after others and you have a larger team. If you are short of toilet paper, give some away. Instead of focusing on your protection and survival, help to protect others and support them in this time of need.
