Do you remember many new year resolutions that didn’t last very long? Often these resolutions are goals. Goals have a high and a low. We aim for them, achieve them and then have a let down. Or we don’t achieve them and feel disappointed. I am not suggesting that we don’t have goals. I am suggesting that we also work on values for the new year. For example, kindness, honesty, generosity or compassion. Choose a value for this year and work towards making it a part of your natural behaviour. Look for opportunities to practise. Imagine what impact you will have on others if you are kind more often than right. Imagine the difference you can make to the lives of others if generosity became your strongest value.
You can’t achieve a value. You just have opportunities to practise. You could change another’s mood by simply practising kindness whilst driving. Make your New Year’s resolution to live by your values. Honesty with compassion will change your workplace. Gratitude will bring delight to others.
