The eyes have it!
Heard of eye language? Probably not yet. Your eyes
give and receive significant information. Yes 'give'
as well as receive. Of course we all know that
information enters our pupils as light and is passed
to the brain for decoding. These pupils open and
close in response to light. They also open and close
in response to emotion. Your emotion. Your pupils
will open a little wider when you are interested in
someone. The more interested you are ... the wider
the pupils. At a conscious level, you are not
usually aware of this. At a subconscious level you
are very much aware. Women used to use an early
eye cosmetic to dilate their pupils to make
themselves more attractive. The plant used is
called 'belladonna' ('Beautiful woman' in English).
Modern day mascara makes the pupils look larger
as does eye makeup.
Strange how teachers call their students 'pupils'.
The eyes matter a great deal in establishing
rapport and building trust. Here are some simple
rules to remember and use:
- Keep your gaze on a person's eyes during a
conversation. Don't include the mouth.
- If the person's gaze leaves you, stop talking.
They have stopped listening so there is no point.
- Make sure that you look straight at a person's
eyes when shaking hands or delivering an
important piece of information or a compliment.
- Keep moving your gaze around the eyes. Don't
fix on a point.
- Soften and relax your eyes when listening
- Encourage people to look at your eyes when
speaking to you by stopping the moment they
look away. For example, if they are entering
data on their computer, stop when they cease
to look at your eyes. They will come back soon
if you wait.
So there...the eyes are the windows that let in
the information. They also tell others a lot
about you and how you are feeling. People can
catch your mood through your eyes. Is your mood
worth catching?
